Best friends Jay and Evan run a convenience store in a rapidly changing neighborhood. When a real estate developer stops by with an offer to buy the place, their deep-rooted connection is tested. As the choice to sell weighs on Evan’s shoulders, and with limited time to decide, their community is ripped apart and the very foundation of the world around them begins to rumble and quake.

PROJECTS IN DEVELOPMENT

Throughout the year, Trademark invests in behind the scenes development of several projects from local writers, composers, lyricists, and theater-makers. While the projects below did not receive public presentations, each team was given financial support, critical feedback, and private workshopping time with actors to further develop their plays and musicals.

FOUR MEASURES

Book by Kira Obolensky
Music and Lyrics by David Darrow

Based on the “21 Grams Theory” and the bizarre experiments conducted by Dr. Duncan MacDougall in Haverhill, Massachusetts in 1907, this new musical follows a young nurse’s search for purpose as she aids an eccentric doctor in his bizarre experiment to weigh patients as they die to prove the human soul has physical weight. Weaving between the memories of the sick and dying and a peculiar man battling his own grief, Four Measures traverses the gap between what we leave behind and where we might go beyond our final breath.

THE REUNION

Created by Tyler Michaels King and Tyler Mills

A group of old high school friends gathers for a murder mystery party game night. Costumes, drinks, and one hell of a story are making for a fun evening. But once the game gets going, the host is mysteriously murdered. Like, actually murdered. Is it all part of some elaborate, nefarious crime? Or is it a bizarre accident? Did someone spike the punch? Is the gun even real? What’s that banging coming from the basement door? Most importantly: who’s out to get who? As relationships fray and secrets are revealed, the group must keep playing to figure out the mystery behind the mystery.

THE OSTENTATIOUS OUTLAWS OF NEEHAI VALLEY

Book, Music and Lyrics by Keith Hovis

Smack dab in the middle of a burgeoning nation lies the sleepy town of Neehai Valley. It’s a place full of simple people, happily living a life of unchallenged bliss, just as the good Lord intended. But when a new fad sweeps through town, it awakens thoughts and feelings the townsfolk didn’t even know they had. Suddenly, the residents find themselves in the throes of a cultural transformation and/or societal collapse, depending on who you ask. Ostentatious Outlaws of Neehai Valley is a darkly comedic new musical that asks: What happens after the revolution? (And apologizes in advance for not holding more stakeholder meetings.)
