What is more exciting than working on an ambitious brand new work with an ambitious brand new company?
- Jason A. Rojas
Jason was born in Mexico and grew up in the stunning town of Tequisquiapan, Queretaro. At the age of six he moved to Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. His life in the Theater started in 7th grade. Jason, being a small town teen that liked to listen to the Aquabats and Dashboard Confessional, had the rebellious shaggy hair that happens at that age. He also played football, as you do in small town Wisconsin. He was not good at it. His mother, being the wise woman that she is, gave him a choice: either cut the hair or try out for the play(The Music Man). He tried out and got cast as the Constable. That one line as the Constable started him on the path to where he is now. Jason attended the University of Minnesota/Guthrie Theater B.F.A Actor Training program and graduated in 2010. Since graduation he has been working in theaters around the Twin Cities: The Guthrie Theater, Mixed Blood Theater, Park Square Theater, Great River Shakespeare Festival, Gremlin Theater, and others. He also spent a wonderful year at The Oregon Shakespeare Festival. He is proud to be son to the best parents. He would like to thank Ken Washington for believing in him and seeing the talent in him that he himself was not aware of.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE VERSION OF ROBIN HOOD TO DATE?
I am embarrassed to say that Robin Hood was not a huge part of my childhood. I believe I saw the Disney film when I was a child? I should say... I am that weird actor that does not really enjoy movies. I find it hard to explain why. If you see me on the street and want to talk about it maybe we can figure out why. Not having a huge preconception of Robin Hood has been great for me in this process. It seems like Trademark is trying to look at it with a fresh eye and that is how I am looking at it.
THE SHERIFF IS AN ICONIC PART OF THE ROBIN HOOD MYTH, WHAT ARE YOU MOST INTERESTED IN EXPLORING IN YOUR VERSION OF HIM?
I am interested in giving Tyler and Tyler what is on the page with as much honesty as I can provide. I am glad that I have been given the opportunity to attack this role from a neutral space and without the clout that is associated with him. I, as an actor, also love taking on conflicting parts. For example, when I first got cast as Mercutio years ago I was shocked. Being very honest, I had always disliked him as a character. At the time I just saw him as a privileged asshole. After attacking the part and letting go preconceptions of him, I found a way to fall in love with him/ understanding his actions. I feel I am using many of the same tools to fall in love with the Sheriff. Let's see where we end up!
ON WORKING WITH TRADEMARK
I am excited to be in the room with such incredible talent. I am also excited to work on a piece like this. I have been on a long streak of doing classical plays and it has been very refreshing to work on something being born in the room. I love rehearsal and being part a new work is an inspiration. And... the musicians/singers in the room stun me every day. If you have seen me out at karaoke you know why. What is more exciting than working on an ambitious brand new work with an ambitious brand new company?
I can't wait to share this beautiful thing with an audience!
